This is the master blueprint. This is the 6-zone legacy homestead we are engineering from scratch on the rugged, rocky clay soils of Cape Breton Island.
Take a good look at the city view, if you are a city type person. It is a stunning view, but let’s be completely honest: a nice view gets old real fast if it isn’t where your heart is.
Not long ago, I was out camping on a piece of raw land. I stood there working a simple, manual hand pump, watching the water hit the ground. In that exact moment, a rush of memory hit me. It reminded me completely of my childhood. I looked around and thought to myself: Yes. I think I’m going to do that again.
We Just Called It Home
Most people today use flashy buzzwords like “homesteading” or “living off-grid.” To me, that’s just a modern label for a normal life.
I grew up on a small, remote farm. It was tucked so far back in the thick of the woods that we literally had to come out just to hunt! There was no internet, no smartphones, and no computers—mainly because they didn’t exist anywhere on earth yet. We didn’t have power, wind turbines, and we didn’t have solar panels.
What we did have was a house with absolutely zero insulation, a roaring wood cookstove, a cold root cellar, and an outhouse. Most folks watching YouTube today would call that an extreme survival setup.
We did have running water, though. Every single morning, without fail, my mother would kick my butt out the back door and send me running down the path to the well with a bucket swinging from each hand. And we had a luxury outhouse, too—most days, there weren’t even any mice or rats in it!
The Real 14-Season Race Against Time
At 65 years of age, leveraging a lifetime of farm, construction, and heavy equipment experience, I am stepping back into that arena. But we aren’t building a drafty, illegal shack in the woods. We are navigating strict building codes and using raw skill to build fully permitted, overbuilt infrastructure designed to outlast the brutal East Coast winters.
This is an independent, 7-year documentary project tracking heavy-duty forestry, sawmilling, massive earth-moving, and genuine structural engineering. We are building history before I retire forever.
