It’s happening, It’s really, really HAPPENING!
Here’s the thing about life… you can’t really press pause or get a do-over. As you get older and the time draws nearer, you think you fooled nature, but you only fooled yourself.
I’ve done years of planning. I’ve done thousands of hours of research. The YouTube channel is set up, ready, and waiting for the intro video: “Shifting Gears: Watering Your Dry Cabin.” The new website is up and running. I’m ready.
I reckon I need about 24 hours of sleep first; it’s been a long but productive day. Then, come Monday, I’ll be kicking butt and taking names. Why? Because I’m excited about living so far back in the woods I’ll have to come out just to hunt.
I’ve lived off-grid before—no power, no phone, no computer, no internet. Hell, there was no internet or computer back in those days anyway! All we had was a house with no insulation, a root cellar, a wood cookstove, and an outhouse. Some say I was raised with a rifle in one hand and a gun in the other; some don’t.
I know what you’re thinking: “But you had running water, right?”
Yes, we did. It was me running to the well with a bucket in both hands!
We did have a “luxury” outhouse, though. Meaning it didn’t have mice or rats… most days.
The funny thing is, you are probably saying to yourself, “My god, that’s awful. I would never live like that.” You might think but, it beats being homeless. In fact, the farm was—and has always been—the fondest memory of my life.
I am so looking forward to retiring, going home, and living in the country again. Sure, it will be rough at first. No doubt. Some folks might say i’m crazy, but it takes most of my time, and if they don’t like my peaches, they don’t have to shake my tree.
Some of you might be old enough to know why that line came so easily to me. One part of it was Joe Walsh (Life’s Been Good), and the second part was the Steve Miller Band (The Joker). I’m far too honest to steal gold like that and not give credit where credit is due.
