At 65 years old, most guys are looking for a comfortable rocking chair or a golf club. I’m looking for a chainsaw, a team of heavy equipment, and a mountain of raw timber.
For thousands of hours, I have researched, calculated, and planned from right here in Calgary, Alberta. But planning only takes you so far. Soon, the gear shifts. My life is being packed into a car, and I am heading east (going home) to the rugged, wind-swept clay and rock of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia.
The goal? A massive, 6-zone complex homestead built entirely from scratch with self-milled wood and unique, legal structural methods. A Risky task staging a 7 year project 14 seasons of video at 65, I’ll be 72 when I complete, that’s commitment!
But here is the real hook: I am running against a 7-year clock.
This is a race against time before I retire forever. I am building this legacy, not buying it. Over the next 14 seasons, you will see the raw reality of what it takes to tame wild land as a 65-year-old man as he ages. If I fail, time wins. If I succeed, we leave behind an epic piece of infrastructure built to withstand the worst of the North Atlantic elements, lasting 200 years.
Right now, we are in the prequel phase. Before I cut a single tree in Nova Scotia, I need the right tools for the gauntlet. Next week, I am hitting the pavement in Calgary to evaluate 6 different heavy equipment brands to see who builds the machine tough enough to back this dream. I’ll also be shopping for gear and supplies I’ll need to get started and finish this massive task.
The property lines are drawn. The clock is ticking, and I ain’t no spring chicken!
